Singaporean Moms Aren't Warming Their Milk With Hot Water Anymore: Report

It was 2:30PM on a Saturday afternoon when I got my first wake-up call.

My husband and I were on a walk with our daughter at the Botanic Gardens. It wasn’t a special trip; it was the same weekend day trip we always do. The only difference was that our daughter had drank much less milk over lunch.

But then she started crying, and I instantly knew we’d made a mistake.

Stimulating Your Letdown - What Really Works

There’s many recommendations for moms that need more yield - but it’s important to know that the biggest underlying reasons for low supply are engorgement & clogged ducts.

What feels like low supply might actually be a milk flow problem, which happens when breasts are swollen or lactation ducts are blocked.

There are several ways to remedy engorgement; though every mom’s body is different, these methods often see the best results.

Stimulate with Warmth

Applying warmth to your breats stimulates oxytocin hormone production, which promotes lactation.

However, this means you'd need to boil water or warm your compress before you express milk.

Stimulate with Cold

Swollen breast tissues narrow the lactation ducts where milk flows through, but applying cold to them will help reduce the swelling & pain.

But just like warm compresses, this requires constant access to a fridge to re-chill the item between usage.

Self Massaging

Unexpressed milk eventually forms clogs in lactation ducts; these aren't only painful, but also create blockages that milk from flowing freely.

But self-massaging requires a lot of strength & time. You can pay a lactation consultant to massage you, but that's an extra cost to you.

My daughter must have been gassy or just not in the mood to feed over lunch, so her appetite had come back in full force after missing a full feeding session. And there we were, in the middle of a park with a baby whose cries could probably be heard until Jurong Point.

If you’ve ever passed your baby bag to your husband because your shoulders needed a break, or if you’ve ever tested milk on your wrist - unsure if it was evenly warmed - and if you’ve ever stressed over people staring while you anxiously wished your milk could be warmed faster…all while your baby got hungrier and crankier for their next meal, then what I’m about to share might change your whole breastfeeding journey from here on out.

But first, I need to tell you something that might annoy a few moms;

Hot water isn't better just because it's free

A lot of moms will argue that there’s no need to fix what isn’t broken. Our parents used hot water baths to warm the milk they gave us and we turned out fine, right? But that doesn’t excuse the inconvenience & unreliability it causes you.

I’m Cassandra, a supermama to one adorable girl. My husband and I had done extensive reading while I was pregnant, and had spoken to many friends & family members about their experience breastfeeding. I thought that our goal of breastfeeding for at least a year would have been smooth sailing.

But 4 months postpartum, that day in the park changed what I thought I knew about breastfeeding;

The day that changed my breastfeeding journey

Let me tell you what happened that day after my baby started crying.

We rushed to the nearest bench and grabbed everything from my baby bag - my thermos full of water, a plastic bowl, the chilled milk I pumped from the day before. I had warmed my milk hundreds of times this way, but never under this much pressure.

By the time I got my milk bottle into the hot water bath I’d prepared, my daughter was already turning red in the face. My poor husband was trying to pacify her as best he could, but she wasn’t having any of it.

Every minute felt like an eternity - me, constantly testing the milk on my wrist until it was done - my husband, sweating from both the heat and the increasingly loud bundle in his arms. The whole ordeal took 12 minutes from reaching that bench to my daughter getting her milk, but each second was more than stressful enough.

“I don’t want to deal with that ever again,” my husband muttered while slouched on the bench as I fed our daughter. And I wholeheartedly agree - I didn't want every walk in the park to feel like we were carrying a time bomb, or suffer through the side eyes of strangers thinking we were bad parents.

The problem nobody wants to talk about

Here's what most parents don't realise until it happens to them.

Milk isn't warmed all at once — it's warmed from the outside in. A milk bottle that’s placed in a water bath will start warming at the point where the water touches the bottle, which means you can get a bottle that's scalding on one side and still cold in the middle. Shake it, and you're never quite sure you've mixed it properly. Test it on your wrist, and you're only checking the top of the milk.

That's the real reason hot water feels so inconsistent - you could have done everything “right” but your milk isn’t going to be evenly warmed any faster.

And that's before you even get to the next most glaring issue: hot water baths aren’t convenient to use on-the-go. You need an average of 300ml of hot water to fully submerge a standard size baby bottle - so that’s one full thermos of hot water to carry for every 2 feeding sessions.

My husband and I used to accept that it was just part of the breastfeeding journey - and it was worth the sacrifice of sore shoulders if it meant our daughter wouldn’t be confined to home just so she never missed a feeding session. But we needed a better solution to this, otherwise we'll just have repeats of the park episode anywhere & everywhere.

The three things I needed to get right

After a solid month of chatting with other mums about their experiences & frustrations, I mapped out exactly what separates the milk warming methods that actually made life easier and the ones that made things worse

1.  SPEED WITHOUT GUESSING: Every minute spent without a bottle of warm milk is another minute your baby is spending hangry.

2. CONSISTENTLY EVEN WARMING - No cold spots, no burns, no overheating. The kind of consistency that lets you skip testing the milk’s temperature.

3. CARRY LESS WEIGHT - Every extra thing you pack in your baby bag is one more thing to weigh you down.

Missing any of these criteria is a huge drawback

That’s why hot water baths become a struggle to manage. That’s why wired warmers fail the moment you leave home without a powerbank. And that’s why poor quality portable warmers disappoint once you actually check for cold or hot spots.

I felt like I had an impossible equation to solve in front of me, until a relative kindly shared her personal recommendation; Supermama Lab’s Portable Milk Warmer.

I ordered one as soon as I could - 5 months later, I’m happy to report that feeding my daughter has never been easier. She gets her milk within 5 minutes, I never have to second guess if my milk is ready - and best of all? I haven’t packed a thermos in my baby bag ever since.

Why this one actually works

I had my doubts when my relative shared this warmer with me, so I naturally researched as much as I could.

This Portable Milk Warmer doesn’t need hot water or an electric socket at all. It runs on a rechargeable 8,800mAh battery - nearly double the average capacity of other warmers! - and is designed with Smart Heat Tech that directly heats up the milk in a bottle - in other words, it warms from the inside out unlike hot water baths.

That solved my stressing over cold spots; and because the Smart Heat Tech actively monitors the temperature of your milk, the warmer will automatically stop at the desired temperature instead of continuing to warm until it potentially burns.

And the cherry on top is the milk warmer has a digital display for the milk’s temperature, so there’s literally zero doubts over whether the milk is done warming..

It’s pretty clear this warmer was built around one big idea; combining everything you need to warm your milk into an easy to use, travel-friendly device - all while making your baby bag lighter..

Why this one actually works

• The Functionality: Warms milk without needing to be plugged in or the help of hot water.
• The Smart Heat Tech - No cold spots, no scalds, no burns, no ruined milk.
• The Size - Small, compact and lightweight enough to even fit in a handbag.
• The Battery - Lasts 6 uses or 12 feeding sessions after fully charging, plus it can be recharged via any USB-C cable.

All of these features, plus the added benefit of being compatible with 14 of Singapore’s most popular baby bottle brands, including Hegen, Nuk, Pigeon, Avent & more. My main baby bottles are Hegen so I can directly bottlefeed my daughter after warming without needing to transfer the milk to another bottle.

“A Must Have For Your Breastfeeding Journey”

“This was a LIFESAVER for my pumping journey. After the first few weeks postpartum, my supply dropped as low as 1oz per side when I pumped. I was already looking into formula milk brands when my LC recommended this massager to me, and it worked like a charm!

I use this before & after every pumping session. Now, I get an average of 4oz per side after pumping, and I never feel engorged anymore!”

What our first few weeks looked like

I know every mom’s breastfeeding journey will be different, but I thought it’d be helpful to share how my household’s routine changed for the better after our portable warmer arrived at our doorstep;

• The first few times we used it, we were trying to get a feel of it - testing how it warms plain water, learning the controls, and comparing the warming speed. The first real test happened when my daughter’s late afternoon feeding session happened - the warmer passed with flying colours after a quick 3 minute warming job.
• By the seventh day, the warmer went in my baby bag on every outing - groceries, day trips, meals, clinics - and we never had an issue with on-the-go feeding sessions.
• By the second week, we had put our thermoses back into storage. There hadn’t been a single moment where we felt we needed a hot water bath to warm my milk, even when we were home.

That’s just an example of how quickly the portable warmer became a mainstay in our daily routine.

My Closing Thoughts

I’m now two months away from my 1 year anniversary of exclusively breastfeeding - it hasn’t been an easy journey, but it’s been a lot more bearable. I’ve recommended the portable warmer I got to a lot of moms (including many of the ones I first spoke to!) and I’ve heard nothing but good feedback from them too. It’s currently on offer at Supermama Lab’s website - you can get the milk warmer plus a bunch of other essentials that make feeding babies on the go easier, like a cooler bag that helps keep milk chilled and a portable brush set to clean your used baby bottles.

You’ll also get a free adapter with every milk warmer - remember to check the guide they provide for which adapter your bottle might need!.
